john harris
In 1985, NASA invited John Harris to join their Art Program . This involved a short period of touring the launch complex at Cape Canaveral and attending a launch of the Space Shuttle. It resulted in the painting 'Aftermath T+60', which now hangs in the Kennedy Space Centre and is part of the Smithsonian Collection.Inspired by that commission, he began a series of painting of a more abstract nature, reflecting on Man's relationship with the Earth. The consequence of this work was the development of a visual language which is exclusive to these paintings. A fuller explanation of the techniques involved may be found in the vimeo film : The Secret History of the Earth.
The striking paintings and illustrations of English artist John Harris imagine a brightly colored, haunting world beyond Earth and even beyond the stars. Harris’ vision has been a big part of the look of science fiction, thanks to his cover art for popular sci-fi books from the ’80s, including titles by John Scalzi, Ben Bova, and Orson Scott Card. The new Titan Books spans Harris’ career, from those book covers to his haunting paintings to his work inspired by his time visiting NASA.
